Honda has started an environmental sustainability initiative to help ensure a strong commitment to reduction of CO₂ emissions among its parts suppliers and logistics companies. Through this initiative, Honda is working with suppliers to raise awareness and associate involvement on CO₂ emissions, identify energy-saving opportunities and establish management of greenhouse-gas reduction activities.

Honda of America Mfg. began operating a new on-site Material Management Center at its Marysville Auto Plant in 2010 to improve the efficiency of parts logistics. This parts consolidation center eliminated 130 shuttle truckloads of parts per day, saving approximately 100,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year. In addition, reduced use of forklifts to load and unload parts saves approximately 160,000 gallons of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) annually. Overall, the consolidation center reduces CO₂ emissions by an estimated 1,200 metric tons per year, and began operations as a zero waste-to-landfill facility. A similar consolidation center is now being developed at the Anna Engine Plant.

Since starting its manufacturing operation in Ohio more than 30 years ago, Honda has pioneered use of returnable parts containers and maximizing space utilization in trucks carrying parts.

As operations have grown in North America, Honda plants in Ohio now share a parts transportation network with other Honda plants throughout North America to help assure full loads and efficient routes. Since implementation in 2008, this network has reduced truck transport by 6.8 million miles, reducing CO₂ emissions by 9,000 tons.

In addition, Honda's shared transportation network optimizes parts delivery for Saturday production by delivering parts earlier than required delivery times and maintaining full truckloads. This practice cuts truck transport by more than two million miles per year, reducing CO₂ emissions by more than 2,700 metric tons.
